We would like to thank all the Umpires who attended the ROWONTARIO Umpires Forum on Saturday November 14th as part of the annual Training Conference and AGM. Congratulations to our 2009 Umpires of the Year - Jane Jarvis and Franc Tomsic ROWONTARIO has reviewed all the feedback from this year's Umpires Forum and we have developed a Workplan that details the 2010 intiatives that the Umpires Committee will be working on throughout 2010. Your feedback is welcome and most appreciated.

WHERE’S THE BEST PLACE TO WATCH A RACE? from the UMPIRE BOAT! · There are more that 35 sanctioned regattas in Ontario every year? · A minimum four (4) RCA licensed umpires MUST be “on duty” at all regattas – for the duration of the regatta? · Umpires are not all old and crabby? They are dedicated to ensuring that regattas are safe and that athletes are treated fairly. · Umpires can be rowers, coaches, parents/relatives of rowers, anyone who wants to watch racing up close. It’s a great job for Masters rowers. · New Umpires are assigned a Mentor Umpire who can help them “learn the ropes” and answer their questions QUALIFICATIONS: · Some knowledge and a love of rowing from your experience as a rower, coach, parent, volunteer · A strong desire to ensure that regattas are safe and athletes are always treated fairly · Availability to attend and umpire at some regattas each season. TO BECOME A CERTIFIED RCA UMPIRE YOU WILL: · Attend a one-day RCA Clinic (the cost of the clinic is $30.00) and become familiar with the RCA Rules of Racing– this will qualify you as an RCA Associate Umpire · Attend a minimum of five (5) different regattas as an Associate Umpire over the next two (2) years and partner with a Mentor Umpire to become familiar with all aspects of umpiring · Successfully complete the RCA written and practical umpire examinations by the end of the second year after your initial clinic. WELCOME TO UMPIRES’ CORNER! ROWONTARIO Umpires’ affairs are lead by the Umpires Committee. Members are appointed, upon application, for a two year term by the Vice-President, Events and Umpires and the Chair of the Committee. The current Umpires Committee comprises:
The mandate of the ROWONTARIO Umpires’ Committee is to develop and improve umpiring in the province of Ontario. To that end, the committee works to deliver training, mentoring opportunities for new umpires and is constantly looking at different ways to attract new umpires.
