How Do I Become an Umpire?

If you want to broaden your knowledge of rowing, test your decision-making abilities, give back to the rowing community or simply wish to support an amateur sport, umpiring may be for you.

To become an RCA-Licensed umpire, here are the steps to take:

1. Register for an umpires' clinic (see list of dates below). Cost is $30 for a one-day course on the basic RCA Rules of Racing. Once you've completed this course, you are an Associate Umpire and will be assigned to a Mentor Umpire to help you. You will also be provided with an Associate Umpire Training Log Sheet where you will be able to record the experience you accummulate over the next two years.

2. As an Associate Umpire, gain experience by umpiring in 5 sanctioned regattas within a 2 year period under the guidance of your Mentor Umpire. Work with your assigned Mentor Umpire to complete your Associate Umpire Training Log.

3. Present the completed Associate Umpire Training Log to the ROWONTARIO Office to certify that you have completed all the necessary training.

4.  Take the RCA Umpire licensing exams (see dates below). The Umpire Exam consists of 2 components, a written exam followed by a practical exam. After successful completion of both exam components, you will be issued a RCA Umpire license.

Once a licensed umpire, you will be eligible to officiate at any regatta in Canada.
