Regatta Sanctioning

The purpose of sanctioning is to ensure the safer and fair organization of regattas. Unsanctioned regattas are not covered under Rowing Canada Aviron’s insurance policy.

Rowing Canada Aviron delegates the sanctioning of all rowing regattas, except for designated National Regattas, to the Provincial Rowing Associations. Consequently, ROWONTARIO is responsible for sanctioning rowing regattas taking place in Ontario.

2010 Regatta Sanction Application Form -

From: Derek Ventnor, Executive Director

Re: 2010 Regatta Sanction

The 2010 Regatta Sanction Procedure and Application Form is now available for download. (see above link)

All requests for sanction for 2010 regattas must be submitted using only this form.

ROWONTARIO will not acknowledge receipt of or process any applications submitted using a form that has been modified in any way. (Including conversion to another format).

If you used the fill-able PDF form in 2009 and saved it, simply change the relevant information and send it in. (We will be looking more closely in 2010 at requests for Rule exceptions and correlation to your regatta packages)

The PDF form is very easy to use. Simply click on the field you wish to enter information and type it in. Once complete, hit the “submit button and your form will be emailed directly to the Executive Director. The ED will then review your application and confirm sanction or contact the sender if there are any issues that have been identified and need to be resolved before sanction can be granted.

Starting in 2010, we are asking that a copy of your regatta package (or a link to the website to where it can be found) be included with your application for sanction. We will be reviewing all regatta packages as part of the sanctioning process this year.

All regattas in Ontario must be sanctioned by ROWONTARIO in order to be covered by the Rowing Canada Aviron liability insurance policy. Regattas deemed as National Regattas must also be sanctioned by the RCA Safety and Events Committee after receiving ROWONTARIO sanction.

Applications must be received a minimum of 15 business days before the regatta is to occur.

Applications will be reviewed within 5 business days of receipt. After review, ROWONTARIO will issue a letter (via email) to the Regatta Chair confirming sanction OR will advise the chair of any questions/issues that need to be resolved before sanction can be granted.

Once sanction is granted a copy of the sanction letter, and the sanction application, will be copied to the Chief Umpire.

As a service to all Ontario regatta organizers and our Umpires and Associate Umpires, ROWONTARIO will, at the request of the Regatta Chair, issue a “Call for Umpires” to assist each regatta organizing committee with recruiting umpires for their regatta.

In order to facilitate this, at the time of applying for sanction, we are asking that each organizing committee provide us with the following information:

  • Name and Email address of person Umpires should contact to volunteer (if different than Chief Umpire)
  • Rate of Mileage support being provided to each umpire (if any)
  • Accommodation support being provided to each umpire (if any)
  • Meal provisions for umpires (if any)
  • Number of shifts per regatta day
  • Time(s) Umpires are to report for duty

Upon receipt of this information, and sanction approval, ROWONTARIO will send an eblast through our umpire network. (ROWONTARIO cannot release our mailing lists to regatta organizers).

We will also post this information on our website for umpires to access. (Unless directed otherwise by the regatta chair.)

This is a service we hope that all regatta organizers will take advantage of this year. At our 2009 Umpire Forum, communication about regattas was an area of weakness that was noted by our Umpires. We hope this service will improve the level of communication between regatta organizers and our umpires.

The earlier sanction applications are submitted with the above info, the more eblasts ROWONTARIO can send out on your behalf.

At the end of your regatta, we would also like you to send us your results so that they can be posted to the ROWONTARIO website.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Looking forward to another great regatta season.

Sincerely,
 Derek Ventnor
Executive Director
ROWONTARIO
