In order to become a certified RCA Coach, there are two workshop weekends that must be taken, online completion of Making Ethical Decisions module, completion of an assignment and a practical evaluation.

RCA Coach Weekend 1

The 16-hour long RCA Coach Weekend #1 clinic is a recognized coach education course in the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP); completion of the course is the first step in becoming a certified RCA Coach.

This course is for coaches who are actively coaching competitive rowers and specifically prepares coaches who are taking athletes in the Training to Train and Learning to Compete stages of the LTAD to regattas.

Topics covered in RCA Coach Weekend #1 include:

Ethical Decisions

Long Term Athlete Development
• Learn how to utilize the LTAD model to guide in planning training, competitive, and recovery programs to allow athletes to achieve optimal performances and remain active for life
Analyzing Performance
• Movement patterns in sweep and sculling technique in Canada
• RCA model rowing stroke

Rigging

Designing a Sport Program
• Aerobic training categories, VO2 max, anaerobic threshold, categories of intensity, training phases, cross-training are covered

Movement Screen
• Learn to conduct a basic movement screen that will help determine the appropriate starting level of athletes

Planning a Practice
• Develop an emergency action plan appropriate to your facility
• Learning to recognize hazards, anticipate and manage risks
• Structure of a practice plan
• Skill acquisition and physical abilities

Delivering a Practice
• How to maximize learning
• Key elements in the teaching process
• Intervention and feedback for athletes

Supporting the Competitive Experience
•Rules of racing
•Competition review of the LTAD

• Instructors who are actively coaching competitive athletes/crews

Do I need any pre-requisites before taking this course?
• No! This is the first step in becoming a NCCP recognized RCA Coach, and as such does not require any pre-requisites.

Do I get recognized for completing this course?
• You will be designated as “in training” in the NCCP database

What are the next steps after taking this course?
• If you haven’t already done so, complete the Coaches Association of Canada’s Make Ethic Decisions online evaluation by logging in to the NCCP’s Locker Database

RCA Coach Weekend 2

The 16-hour long RCA Coach Weekend #2 clinic is a recognized coach education course in the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP); completion of the course is the second step in becoming a certified RCA Coach.

This course is for coaches who have completed RCA Coach Weekend #1 and are actively coaching competitive rowers. RCA Coach Weekend #2 offers more in-depth training on topics covered in RCA Coach Weekend #1, covers additional advanced topics, and allows coaches to reflect on their practical coaching (using the assignment from Weekend #1 as a resource for this dialogue).

• If you haven’t already done so, complete the Coaches Association of Canada’s Make Ethic Decisions online evaluation by logging in to the NCCP’s Locker Database
• After you’ve had a chance to practice course teachings, request RCA Coach evaluation through ROWONTARIO by contacting the Programs and Services Coordinator (416-759-8405)
• You will receive your certification once you have successfully completed the Make Ethic Decisions online evaluation as well as your coaching evaluation.

RCA Coach Evaluation FAQ’s
The Coach, Evaluator, ROWONTARIO and Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) all have roles and responsibilities related to the evaluation. In addition, there are some administrative aspects to the process.

RCA Coach Evaluation Costs
Coach travels with a crew to an RO Training Centre: $175 + tax
Evaluator travels to coach: $300 + tax *note far distances may be subject to an additional fee.
