ROWONTARIO hosted the 2017 ROWONTARIO Masters Championships on Sunday July 16th at the Welland International Flatwater Centre North Course in Welland, ON.

The 2017 regatta welcomed 358 rowers, racing in 272 entries in 65 races.  Continuing the trend of the last 6 years, female participants and entries exceeded the men’s in every boat category except the open pairs event, which was equal.  The 2017 regatta saw 27 clubs competing from as close as the South Niagara Rowing Club just down the street, to as far away as the Montreal Rowing Club, who traveled 712km and won 3 gold medals in their 4 entries. Congratulations!

Congratulations to Hanlan Boat Club of , who topped the medal count with 16 medals out of 21 entries.  Western Reserve Rowing Association from Cleveland, OH, came in second with 15 medals, while Don Rowing Club from Mississauga tied with Three Rivers Rowing Association from Pennsylvania with 14 medals apiece.

Another trend that continued in 2017 was the large contingent of U.S. participants: one third of all entries were from U.S. clubs, located in Michigan, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.  ROWONTARIO appreciates the support from our American rowing friends; it is always a pleasure enjoying the friendly competition and camaraderie at this event!

Thankfully, forecasted thunderstorms didn’t hit the area until after crews had finished racing, and the breezy but sunny conditions made for great racing.  ROWONTARIO would like to thank Chief Umpire Judy Sutcliffe and her team of exceptional umpires for keeping the regatta on schedule, as well as Regatta Chair Carol Purcer for ensuring the regatta was an enjoyable, competitive, and fun experience for all participants.  Thank you also to the many volunteers and City of Welland and ROWONTARIO staff who contributed to the day’s success.

The results from the 2017 ROWONTARIO Masters Championships can be found here.

The next ROWONTARIO regatta is the ROWONTARIO Championships on July 29th-30th on the South Course at South Niagara Rowing Club, also in Welland, ON.  Entries close on Sunday July 23rd at 11:59PM on RegattaCentral.
