The 51st annual ROWONTARIO Championships took place July 27th & 28th in London, ON. With glassy conditions, Saturday morning started off on a perfect note. 89 women’s singles and 97 men’s singles took to Lake Fanshawe for time trials. As the day progressed, the wind began to pick up, creating unsafe and unfair condition for competitors.  In collaboration with coaches and umpires, Chief Umpire, Judy Sutcliffe made the call to delay racing, and eventually postpone the remaining 9 straight finals from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning.

Races began early on Sunday morning in preparation for incoming inclement weather and expected rough conditions on Sunday afternoon.  In trying to beat the bad weather and give every competitor a race, medals were awarded based on heat times from the previous day in order to fit the remaining events. We appreciate everyone’s flexibility with accommodating the challenging conditions over the weekend.

We would also like to acknowledge University of Western Ontario Boat Club, our partner in hosting this regatta who continue to make changes to improve facility at Lake Fanshawe. This year, our competitors benefited from upgraded start platforms and a larger trailer area. With the support of their partners (Hudson Boat Works, Western Rowing Club, Fluidesign and the London Rowing Club) UWO Boat Club is able to provide a championship venue, worthy of 750 athletes!

Thank you to our Chief Umpire team of Judy Sutcliffe, her team of Assistant Deputies Louise Hastings, Lynda Dundas and Andrew Smith and great team of Umpires that helped make this regatta a success; Ontario is lucky to have many skilled and knowledgeable umpires.  Special thanks to the 80+ volunteers that helped make this weekend run smoothly – especially Matt Waddell (Regatta Chair) and Erin Alizadeh (Volunteer Coordinator) from the UWO Boat Club who were integral to the success of the weekend.  As always, thank you as well to the athletes, coaches and supporters and congratulations.
