RowOn Beach Sprint Championships, Training Camp, Coaching Workshop Set for June-July

The newest Olympic rowing discipline will be featured prominently in Row Ontario’s summer schedule in 2024.

The provincial championships, a high-performance training camp and coaching workshop focused on Beach Sprints will all take place in June and July in the Niagara region. Last October, the International Olympic Committee announced that Beach Sprints will join the Olympic rowing programme starting at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

Row Ontario’s Beach Sprint programme for the Summer of 2024 will begin with the second edition of the RowOn Beach Sprint Championships on June 22 at Lakeside Park in St. Catharines. This year’s event will follow up on a successful first edition at Woodbine Beach in Toronto last August, and will once again feature both solo and double events in Open, U19 and Mixed categories.

The RCA Coastal Coach Workshop and High-Performance Beach Sprints Camp will take place on back-to-back days on July 12-13. The Coach Workshop on July 12 is an in-person module offering practical experience for coaches in Coastal Safety – Float Plan/Dynamic Risk Assessment, Beach Entry and Exit – Boathandling, Training and Race Skills, Rigging, and Rules of Racing.

The Beach Sprints Camp on July 13 is geared towards athletes preparing for the RCA National Qualifier. The morning will provide an on-water training and practice opportunity, with afternoon classroom-style sessions dedicated to race progression and strategy discussions. Both the coaching workshop and training camp will be facilitated by Iain Wilson.
