ROWONTARIO hosted the 2017 ROWONTARIO Championships on Saturday July 29th & Sunday July 30th at the Welland International Flatwater Centre South Course in Welland, ON.

The 2017 Championships saw 969 participants race in 718 entries in 64 events over the two-day regatta.  Although the overall number of participants was down slightly from previous years, several boat classes saw a record number of entries: men’s and women’s coxed quads, men’s doubles, and men’s fours.  The average age of participants was 18.2 and 18.3 years for men and women, respectively, but the regatta saw participants of all ages, from young juniors to young-at-heart 50 year old rowers.  The St. Catharines Rowing Club had the most entries of any club this year, with 86 entries, and also topped the medal count with 10 gold, 14 silver, and 9 bronze, for an impressive 33 total medals.  Congratulations! Ottawa Rowing Club, with 24 medals overall, and Don Rowing Club and Ridley Graduate Boat Club, each with 15, rounded out the top 3 in the medal count.

Although a headwind did challenge crews on the Saturday, the breeze was a nice relief from the sun and heat.  ROWONTARIO would like to thank Chief Umpire Judy Sutcliffe and her team of umpires for their exceptional commitment to running a safe and fair regatta – and keeping it on time!  With 91 races Saturday and 97 on Sunday, that was no easy feat!  Thank you as well to Regatta Chair Carol Purcer, who worked tirelessly throughout the weekend to ensure all participants were enjoying a competitive and fun regatta experience.  Thank you as well to the many volunteers and ROWONTARIO staff who contributed in the weekend’s success.

ROWONTARIO would like to congratulate all 27 participating clubs on a great two days of racing.
