Weekend Wrap: Ontario Rowers Medal at World Rowing Masters Regatta

Masters rowers took centre stage in the rowing world from Sept. 10-14 when the World Rowing Masters Regatta was hosted in Banyoles, Spain.

The massive masters regatta was run on the Estany de Banyoles regatta course, which hosted the 1992 Olympic regatta, over five days competition. The regatta had 5418 entries from 745 clubs from throughout the rowing world. Canada was well represented at the event with total of 18 clubs, including five from Ontario. Participating Ontario clubs included the Don Rowing Club, Hanlan Boat Club, Leander Boat Club, London Western Rowing Club and Ridley Graduate Boat Club.

The Ontario rowing contingent either competed representing their home club or were members of composite boats along with rowers from other clubs. The London Western Rowing Club showed the strength of their masters program by winning a medal in each of the ten races they competed in. The earned seven gold medals and two silver medals in LWRC boats, along with another gold in a composite boat. They were also the second-highest placing Canadian club in the overall points standings (first from Ontario), finishing an impressive 30th overall out of the 745 competing clubs. The overall points leader at the event was Sport Club Corinthians Paulista (Brazil), followed by Chinook Performance Racing (USA) and Region Grand Est (France) rounding out the top-3.

Out of the remaining Ontario clubs, the Leander Boat Club earned two silver medals, the Hanlan Boat Club came away with two bronze medals, and the Ridley Graduate Boat Club earned a bronze. Leander had the most entries from Ontario clubs with 13, including LBC and composite boats.
