Weekend Wrap: Queen’s and Brock Take Home OUA Banners


The OUA rowing season wrapped up on Saturday at the Royal Canadian Henley Course in St. Catharines as rowers from across the province competed at the 2025 OUA Rowing Championships.

The regatta took place over two days, with the OUA Development Regatta running on Friday along with the heats in the varsity competition. Saturday’s action was fast and furious with all the races being finals. The host school for the event was the Carleton Ravens

The Queen’s Gaels women’s rowing team completed a three-peat, capturing the OUA title with 543 points. The Gaels reached the podium in every race except one, earning gold in the coxed four, lightweight double, eight, and lightweight pair events. They finished ahead of Western, while the University of Toronto claimed bronze to round out the podium.

Carleton’s Rosie O’Brien was named the Women’s Athlete of the Year. The lightweight singles champion also placed fourth in the women’s doubles event.

The drive for five is complete at Brock, where the Badgers secured their fifth consecutive OUA men’s banner. Brock missed only one podium finish, winning gold in the lightweight eight, singles, doubles, lightweight pairs, and coxed four. The Badgers finished the day with 511 points. Western placed second with the Queen’s Gaels finishing third.

Brock’s Riley Watson was named the 2025 Men’s Athlete of the Year. The third-year medical sciences student earned gold in both the men’s lightweight eight and lightweight doubles.

Overall, the Queen’s Gaels earned the most medals combined in both the men’s and women’s categories with 16 (7 gold, 6 silver, 3 bronze), followed by Western with 13 (4 gold, 6 silver, 3 bronze) and Brock with 12 (6 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze). Other schools earning medals included the Ottawa Gee-Gees (4), Guelph Gryphons (3), McGill Redbirds/Martlets (2), Carleton Ravens (2), Trent Excalibur (2), Toronto Varsity Blues (2), McMaster Marauders (2), and Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (2).

The OUA Development Regatta included novice and junior varsity rowers competing in heats in the morning followed by finals in the afternoon. Schools earning medals in the Development Regatta included Ottawa (4), Western (4), Brock (3), Trent (3), Ontario Tech (2), Nipissing (2), McGill (2), Guelph (1), TMU (1), Waterloo (1), Carleton (1), McMaster (1), and Queen’s (1).

The university rowing season concludes next weekend at the Canadian University Rowing Championships in Montreal, QC.
