Weekend Wrap – Queen’s Women’s Team Earns First CU Banner Since 2007
The fall rowing season wrapped up over the weekend with the Canadian University Rowing Championships headlining from Montreal, QC. The Queen’s Gaels came out on top on the on the women’s side, winning their first women’s championship banner since 2007. Meanwhile the UBC Thunderbirds won their fourth consecutive banners on the men’s side.
A total of 28 university programs competed in the two-day regatta, which was hosted by the McGill University at the Olympic Rowing Basin. Twelve Ontario universities competed at the event, comprising 113 of the 198 entries in the 14 medal events (1x, Lt1x, 2x, Lt2x, 2-, L4+, 8+ in men’s and women’s categories).
The Queen’s Gaels, who have won the last three OUA Rowing Championships, ended the BC universities reign atop the CURC standings, winning the first banner for an Ontario school since Western University won the women’s banner in 2017. They earned a total of 119 enroute to the Championship victory, finishing 19 points ahead of second-place Western. Rounding out the top three on the women’s was the Victoria Vikes who earned 82 points. After winning their fifth consecutive OUA Banner just one week earlier, the Brock Badgers (110 points) narrowly missed a National Banner, finishing just two points behind UBC (112) in the overall men’s standings. Victoria placed third overall on the men’s side with 89 points.
Queen’s (3 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze), Brock (2 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze) and Western (2 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze) each earned the most overall meals at the event with seven, while UBC (3 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze) and UVIC (1 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze) each had six. Other schools winning medals included the McGill (2), Carleton (2), Guelph (1), Waterloo (1), Montreal (1), Calgary (1) and Saskatchewan (1).
