Weekend Wrap: Team Ontario Wins Provincial Points Title at Canada Cup

A successful three days on the water for Team Ontario wrapped up on Saturday in London, ON with the province winning the Canada Cup Trophy.

The Canada Cup Regatta, which returned this year to the regatta schedule for the first time since 2019, took place from Aug. 14-16 at the Doug Wells Rowing Centre on Fanshawe Lake. The regatta was an under-21 event, and featured rowers from seven provinces competing in the men’s and women’s single and pair (2000m), the men’s and women’s double and four (1000m), and the mixed 4x and 8+ (500m). Team Ontario entered boats in all ten events and had 13 entries overall.

At the end of three days of action, Ontario was at the top of the medal tally with ten medals, including an event-high five golds, to go along with two silvers and three bronze. Alberta was next on the medal tally with eight (1 gold, 4 silver, 3 bronze), followed by BC with four (1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze), Nova Scotia (1 gold, 2 silver) and Saskatchewan with three (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze), and Quebec with two (1 gold, 1 bronze). Provincial Points were awarded in the A Final for each rowers’ performance, with Ontario coming out on top and claiming the Canada Cup Trophy.

Many of the rowers on Team Ontario raced in multiple categories over the course of the event. Three team members brought home the biggest medal haul with three medals apiece, as Ashlyn Fehr (Niagara Falls Rowing Club) earned two golds and a bronze (W1x, W4-, Mix8+), Michael Gore (ONGPC) claimed a gold, silver and bronze (M4-, M2-, Mix8+) and Meghan Harris (Guelph Rowing Club) brought home a gold and two bronze (W4-, W1x, Mix8+). Team Ontario was coached by the Ottawa Rowing Club’s Meghan Jolley and the St. Catharine’s Rowing Club’s Liz Iannizzi throughout the event.

While the Canada Cup was taking place in London, the 120th NWIRA Championship Regatta was taking place in the far west of the province. Hosted on Rabbit Lake in Kenora, ON, the North West International Rowing Association held their annual event, which featured 13 clubs and 419 entries from Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Minnesota. The regatta had race categories from juniors to masters in a wide variety of boat categories.

The Minneapolis Rowing Club earned the most medals at the regatta with 35 (9 gold, 12 silver, 14 bronze), followed by the Thunder Bay Rowing Club with 24 (7 gold, 7 silver, 10 bronze). The Winnipeg Rowing Club was next on the medal tally with 23, which included an event-high 13 gold medals.
