The RCA Level 1 Umpire Clinic is a four-hour clinic intended to provide an easily accessible entry point into the RCA Umpire Education Program. The session is meant to attract participants from across Canada. You do not need to be in Ontario to take this session. RCA’s approach to athlete, coach and umpire development is systematic and follows the simple principle of “athletes first”. As such, the Umpire Education program embraces the Athlete Development Pathway approach to rowing.

There is no specific prerequisite experience required to take the Level 1 Umpire Clinic, and you do not need to live in Ontario. If you have some knowledge of the sport of rowing, are committed to ensuring a safe and fair regatta experience for all competitors and are looking for a way to give back to the sport then umpiring may be a great fit for you!

The RCA Level 1 Umpire Clinic includes classroom curriculum delivered by a trained RCA Umpire Clinician, in the following areas:

  1. Introduction to RCA, to rowing, and to umpiring
  2. RCA Rules of Racing & their proper application at sanctioned regattas
  3. Jury Positions, with specific focus on:
    a. Control Commission
    b. Weigh-ins
    c. Start
    d. Finish
    e. Race Umpire

Upon completion of this workshop, candidates will be considered a Level 1 Assistant Umpire in the province in which you reside and normally would umpire. As a Level 1 Assistant, you will be added to the list of umpires in your province and will have the opportunity to work with a Licensed Umpire at sanctioned regattas in the following stations: Start, Finish, Control Commission (including weigh-ins) in upcoming regattas. You will be assigned to the Umpire clinician in your province who will follow up with you to ensure you have the opportunity to participate in regattas, and to assist you as you continue along the Umpire Education Pathway.
