Weekend Wrap: Thunder Bay Sprints Take Place from Kaministiquia River

The annual Thunder Bay Sprints Regatta took place on Saturday from the Kaministiquia River in Thunder Bay, Ontario and featured the host club taking on three of their rivals from across the Border.

The Thunder Bay Rowing Club sent 33 boats to the line to take on rowers from three Minnesota-based clubs; the Duluth Rowing Club (3 entries), Long Lake Rowing Crew (21) and the Minneapolis Rowing Club. The regatta hosted races of either 1000m or 500m for junior, senior and masters athletes in singles, doubles and quads.

The host club earned the most medals bringing home a total of 17, including nine golds, six silvers and two bronze. The Long Lake Rowing Crew was next with ten medals (6 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze), followed by Minneapolis with five (2 silver, 3 bronze) and Duluth, who brought home a gold in every race they entered in for a total of three.

There are two more regattas in Northwestern Ontario coming up this summer as the Tops and Bottoms Regatta takes place on July 29 and the 118th Annual NWIRA Championship Regatta will run on Aug. 18-19. Both events will be held in Kenora, Ont.
