Weekend Wrap: Dominion Day Regatta Featured on Canada Day
Ontario rowers competed in the annual Dominion Day Regatta on the Allan A. Lamport Regatta Course in Toronto on Canada’s 158th birthday. Meanwhile in international regatta action, national team rowers competed in two regattas.
On the domestic front, the Dominion Day Regatta featured a total of 205 entries from seven rowing clubs and saw the competitors race in U17, U19, Senior and Masters events across a wide variety of boat classes. Hosted by the Dominion Day Regatta Association, this year’s race was the 141st edition of the Dominion Day Regatta.
Five clubs comprised the majority of the entries, with the Argonaut Rowing Club (69), St. Catharines Rowing Club (50), Hanlan Boat Club (47), Orillia Rowing Club (27) and Don Rowing Club (10) all sending a strong contingent of rowers. Upper Canada College Rowing and Hatchets Training Centre had one entry apiece. The St. Catharines Rowing Club earned the most gold medal performances with 21, followed by the Argonaut Rowing Club (11), Hanlan Boat Club (8), Orillia Rowing Club (2) and Don Rowing Club (2).
Overseas, the senior women’s team competed at the World Rowing Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland while the senior men’s team competed at the Holland Beker Regatta in Amsterdam, Netherlands. On the women’s side, Katie Clark (Cranbrook, BC) continued her strong start to the season with a fourth-place finish in the women’s single. The women’s four, also competed in the event and placed second the B Final to finish in eighth place overall. In Amsterdam, four boats hit the line for the men’s team and delivered impressive results. The men’s four secured two gold medals by winning their races on Saturday and Sunday, while the men’s double sculls placed second in both their races.
