2022 Canada Summer Games Preview
The Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games began on Aug. 6 and after ten days of competition across a wide variety of sports, the rowing events will begin tomorrow from Martindale Pond in St. Catharines.
The rowing competition will take place over the course of four days on Aug. 17-18 and Aug. 20-21. The first two days of competition will feature qualification heats and repechage for all 14 boat categories. A day off on Friday will be followed by two days of action on Saturday and Sunday, in which every race will either be a medal final or a consolation final. The boat classes being contested are the men’s and women’s eight, quad, four, double, lightweight double, pair, and single. For the full schedule visit the Niagara 2022 website.
As announced in July, Ontario’s rowing team is loaded with talent and will head into the Canada Summer Games with a mixture of club, university and international rowing experience. The team will have boats in all 14 categories and consists of 26 of the best and brightest rowers in province, including 12 rowers on both the men’s and women’s side plus two coxswains. They will be coached by Mary Rao, John Ruscitti, and Dereck Schwandt and Grant Boyd will serve as Team Manager.

The Canada Summer Games are a major sporting event in Canada and serve as a steppingstone for rowers and all athletes towards representing Canada in sporting events on the international stage. At previous editions of the event, Ontario athletes have been a dominant force and rowers have played a large role in Team Ontario’s overall success at the Games. In 2017, Ontario led the overall medal standings with 210 medals (86 gold, 65 silver, 59 bronze) while Ontario rowers brought home a total of ten medals (7 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze). Their seven gold medals were the most in the nation. As of Aug. 16, Team Ontario leads the overall 2022 medal standings with 90 (40 gold, 22 silver, 28 bronze).
