Weekend Wrap: Thanksgiving Weekend Rowing at the Brock Invite

A valuable test run at the site of the OUA Rowing Championships took place over Thanksgiving weekend in St. Catharines as the Brock Invitational Regatta was hosted on Martindale Pond.

Hosted by Brock University Rowing, the Brock Invite is the last university regatta until the OUA Rowing Championships on Oct. 30-31. A total of 11 university programs and 204 entries participated in the event, which saw varsity and novice categories contested in a wide variety of boat classes. Varsity categories raced heats in the morning and A and B Finals in the afternoon, while novice competitors competed in heats only with times determining the overall winners.

The Queen’s Gaels had a strong performance on the water, earning an event-high 22 medals (6 gold, 9 silver, 7 bronze). The Western Mustangs also showed their mid-season form with 16 medals, including nine golds, to go along with four silver and three bronze. The host Brock Badgers were next on the medal tally with 12 (5 gold, 4 silver, 3 bronze).

Other universities competing at the regatta were the Toronto Varsity Blues, Waterloo Warriors, RMC Paladins, Guelph Gryphons, Trent Excalibur, Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, Nipissing Lakers, and McMaster Marauders.

University rowing programs across the province now have just under three weeks to prepare for the OUA Rowing Championships and Development Regatta, which will take place back at Martindale Pond on Oct. 30-31. Several universities along with many Ontario-based clubs will compete this upcoming weekend at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge, MA
