Weekend Wrap: High School Rowing Action Heats Up at South Niagara Invitational
The South Niagara Invitational returned to Welland on Saturday as high school rowers from throughout the province tested themselves just two weeks before the CSSRA Championships.
There were almost 250 entries from 43 high schools at the regatta, which took place on the South Course of the Welland International Flatwater Centre. Boat classes from singles to eights in men’s and women’s junior, senior, novice and mixed divisions competed during a busy race day, which started at 8am and wrapped up just after 6pm.
Fonthill’s E.L. Crossley Secondary School showed the depth of their program throughout the day by placing first out of all schools in gold medals and total medals. The Cyclones earned 14 medals, ten of which were gold, to finish ahead of the Argonaut Rowing Club who finished with nine (3 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze). The Niagara Falls Rowing Club also had a solid day on the water bringing home eight medals (3 gold, 1 sliver, 4 bronze) as did Branksome Hall who earned six medals (1 gold, 3 sliver, 2 bronze) and Upper Canada College who brought home four medals (2 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze). A total of 26 schools earned top-3 finishes in the regatta which featured 26 different categories.
High school rowing action continues next weekend with the WOSSA Rowing Championships in London and the National Capital High School Regatta in Ottawa. The CSSRA Championships will take place in less than two weeks from St. Catharines on June 3-5.
