Row Ontario Postpones July Championship Regattas
With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the closure of recreation facilities and public events across the province, Row Ontario announced on Wednesday the decision to postpone both the Row Ontario Masters Championship and Row Ontario Championship regattas.
The Row Ontario Masters Championships were scheduled to take place in Welland, Ont. on July 12 while the Row Ontario Championships were set for July 25-26 in London, Ont.
“The decision to postpone our July championship regattas comes after a thorough review of the current situation, the projections for the months ahead, and the impact the Ontario rowing community would have to make in preparation these regattas,” said Row Ontario Executive Director Andrew Backer on the decision to postpone these events. “We did not come to this decision lightly. We believe that it is in the best interest of our athletes, coaches, umpires, volunteers and our member clubs to postpone these regattas and we hope this decision will provide some clarity for the Summer months and enable our Member Clubs to focus on their long-term planning for the 2020 calendar year.”
Row Ontario hopes to reschedule the regattas later in the year, but the potential rescheduling of each event will be dependent on how the COVID-19 crisis progresses throughout the Spring and Summer months. Both the Masters Championship and the Row Ontario Championship are marquee events on the Ontario provincial calendar and any decisions on a rescheduled event will be done in consultation with key stakeholders throughout the rowing community.
