Row Ontario Provincial Rowing Centre to Launch in Fall 2020

With the goal of providing a world class training and event hosting environment, Row Ontario announced on Friday they will be opening a Provincial Rowing Centre in the Fall of 2020. In addition to being host for all proprietary events, the Provincial Rowing Centre will also be home to the new Row Ontario Provincial Training Centre.

“We are extremely excited to announce the creation of the Provincial Rowing Centre,” said Andrew Backer, Executive Director of Row Ontario. “We have been working very hard behind the scenes in the last several months to work out all of the logistics behind the creation of a home for Ontario rowing and we couldn’t be happier that we’ve reached the point where we can make this exciting announcement. We would like to thank all of our sport partners including the Canadian Sport Institute of Ontario and Rowing Canada Aviron for their feedback and support in helping us work through the planning phase of this project. We still have a lot of work to do to facilitate a Fall launch, but I believe our team along with our host partner will be up to the task. This centre will be a huge benefit to the Ontario rowing community for many, many years to come.”

The Provincial Training Centre will provide programming for several groups of athletes at different stages of their development and will also become the home of the Ontario Academy of Rowing. Modelled after existing academies in hockey and soccer, the Ontario Academy of Rowing will become Ontario’s first and only rowing academy. Ontario provincial team, NextGen, and identified development athletes will also have the option to train at the centre throughout the year under the supervision of full-time coaches in an optimal daily training environment.

While a location for the Provincial Rowing Centre has not yet been determined, a Request for Proposal has been sent to all locations in Ontario which have been identified as capable of providing the facilities necessary to successfully run the centre. The location will be announced at a later date.

“Building on the successful blueprint of previous Ontario-based training centres, we’ve been actively developing plans to create a daily training environment for provincial athletes.” said Chris Marshall, Row Ontario’s High Performance Manager. “We’ve taken a great deal of time and effort to make sure the structure and timing of the centre fits with the development pathway of Ontario athletes and that our programs align with and complement the existing Canadian high performance rowing system. Providing an optimal daily training environment for the members of the training centre will go a long way towards developing our athletes and will change the landscape for high performance rowing in Ontario for the better.”

A full-time head coach will be hired to run the Row Ontario Provincial Training Centre through a nation-wide application process which will begin within the next week. The expected Fall 2020 start date as well as other logistics surrounding the launching of the Provincial Rowing Centre may be dependent on how the COVID-19 pandemic progresses.
