Weekend Preview: RCA Small Boat Trials Highlight Busy Weekend

Ontario rowers will take to waterways in the Niagara region and in B.C. this weekend as the spring regatta schedule continues.

The RCA Small Boat Trials will kick off the weekend on Friday and will take place on Quamichan Lake in Duncan, B.C. The regatta is an important one for rowers with high performance aspirations, as it serves as a key entry point to RCA’s 2022 National Team programming, including Senior, Under 23, and Junior competitions. Rowing B.C. will host the event which will see singles, pairs and doubles competitors will compete in sprint distance races over three days. Seven provinces will be represented at the event with a strong Ontario contingent of rowers from several clubs including Brock University, Kingston Rowing Club, Niagara Falls Rowing Club, Peterborough Rowing Club and St. Catharines Rowing Club.

The action kicks off on Friday at 1pm PST with the time trials, followed by the repechage, semi-finals and para finals on Saturday. The finals in the remaining races will start at 9am PST on Sunday and finish up just before noon.

While the rowers in B.C. will be participating in their finals heats on Sunday, many of the top high school rowers in the province will be competing at the same time in St. Catharines at the Mother’s Day High School Regatta on Martindale Pond. The St. Catharines Rowing Club will host the event, their second this year, after hosting the Early Bird Regatta just two weeks ago. Many of the 36 participating high school programs are from the Niagara region, however programs from Toronto, Guelph, Ottawa, London, Mississauga and Hamilton will also be represented. Over 200 entries have been submitted for the event and full day of action will see the races start at 8am with the women’s senior 63kg heats and finish just after 5pm with men’s eight final.

Elsewhere in the Niagara Region, the first row tour of the year will take place in Welland. The Niagara Banana Belt Tour, which is being sponsored by the Don Rowing Club, will start at the Notre Dame Rowing Club and proceed along the Welland Canal in the heart of Southern Ontario’s ‘Banana Belt’.
