Updates to Row Ontario Coach Certification Policy

Since 2019, Row Ontario has had in place a Coaching Certification Policy. As with every Row Ontario policy it is evaluated annually, and amendments are brought to the Board of Directors for approval.

With Rowing Canada Aviron’s (RCA) implementation of the Every Coach Certified (ECC) to complement their Safe Sport policies, the Row Ontario Board of Directors met on March 30th and approved changes to the Row Ontario Coaching Certification Policy. These changes bring National and Provincial policies into alignment.

Row Ontario Coach Certification Policy

As outlined in RCA’s ECC Policy, they will publish and maintain an Every Coach Certified Compliance List of registered coaches within each member organization who have completed the ECC requirements. The list will be posted to the Safe Sport section of RCA’s website. This will be the go-to list for members of clubs to know if the coach working with them has met the minimum National requirements to coach.

Earlier this year RCA emailed all coaches who were registered in 2019/20 and 2020/21 with information on the requirements and where they stood in their compliance of ECC. As a reminder the requirements are below, which are also now a part of Row Ontario’s Coach Certification Policy:

  1. Create an account in the NCCP Locker.
  2. Register into the Role of Coach in the RCA WRS
  3. Have a clear and active Criminal Record Check (CRC) or Vulnerable Sector Screen (VSS) on file with each member organization. This screening must be completed every 3 years.
  4. Complete the three eLearning modules in the NCCP Locker:
    • Coach Initiation in Sport** (required by New coaches to the NCCP as of April 1, 2019)
    • Rowing Essentials ** (required by ALL Coaches)
    • Make Ethical Decisions online evaluation (required by ALL coaches). Coaches are encouraged to complete the Make Ethical Decisions module before completing the MED online evaluation.

All three of these modules are also pre-requisites for taking RCA LTR or RCA Coach Weekend 1 Workshops.
** These modules are completed in the NCCP Locker eLearning modules section.

Make Ethical Decisions Module/Course is offered through the Coaching Association of Ontario (CAO), CAO Course Calendar they regularly schedule this course. They also have a MED Home Study option if that is preferable to complete this course. The online evaluation is in the Locker. It is strongly advised to take the course before attempting to complete the evaluation. The evaluation can be challenged but you only get two attempts and then are required to take the course to complete. By taking the course you will receive unlimited attempts to complete the evaluation.

Making Ethical Decisions is a popular course for CAO as it is a requirement for many sports. Row Ontario is exploring the possibility of requesting courses be made available specifically for Ontario rowing coaches. If you still need to complete this requirement and are interested in this option please email Stephen Ross. Should the request be sufficient we will pursue this further, but don’t delay signing up for already scheduled CAO courses.

If cost is a concern with coaching education, CAO has now added MED to its NCCP Coaching Bursary Program for 75% reimbursement. The coaching workshops are also covered in this program. Coaches can apply directly through CAO funding for coaches.

If you have individuals coaching at your club they need to be registered, if for no other reason than to be insured. Volunteers should not have to risk personal liability when giving time to the sport they love.

Row Ontario and Rowing Canada Aviron are here to support coaches in completing all the requirements to be compliant with coaching certification polices. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need further clarification.
