Weekend Preview: Row Ontario Championships Headline Upcoming Weekend
The 2022 Row Ontario Championships will headline the regatta action this weekend as rowers from across the province will make the journey to Welland to participate in the provincial championship event.
Running from the South Course of the Welland International Flatwater Centre on Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24, the Row Ontario Championships will feature almost 500 entries from 30 clubs. There will be 25 Ontario clubs attending the two-day event as well as five from the United States. The action will start at 8:30am on Saturday with the men’s and women’s singles time trials, followed by heats and finals for the other race categories throughout the day. On Sunday the competitors will again start at 8:30am and finish just after 3:30pm with the mixed doubles final as the last scheduled event.
Competitors in Under-17, Under-19, Under-23, Senior categories will all take part in the event in women’s, men’s, and mixed lightweight and open categories.
Elsewhere in the rowing community, the 117th NWIRA Championships will take place in Kenora, Ont. on Friday and Saturday. The event is organized by the Kenora Rowing Club and it’s 346 entries include 19 from the Thunder Bay Rowing Club. The Lunenburg Beach Sprints and RCA Qualifier will also run this weekend from Lunenburg, NS. The Hanlan Boat Club will be represented with two entries at the event. Phil Monckton and Anthony Ciaccia will team up in the men’s double, while Ciaccia will also compete in the men’s single. Finally, the Heart of the 1000 Islands Tour will be run by Ontario Adventure Rowing on Saturday through Ganonoque and the surrounding area.
