Weekend Preview: South Niagara Invitational Returns to Welland
For the second weekend in a row Welland will be the focus of the Ontario rowing community as the South Niagara Rowing Club will host the South Niagara Invitational.
The regatta will make its return to the South Course of the Welland International Flatwater Centre on Saturday, May 21 for the first time since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The regatta will serve as a key test for many high school students as it comes just two weeks before the CSSRA Championships. The Row Ontario Small Boat Regatta ran last weekend on the same course of the WIFC.
Almost 250 entries from 43 high school programs have been submitted for the event. While many of the high schools are in the Niagara region, there’s also a strong contingent of programs from Hamilton and Toronto and as far away as Kingston who will be participating. The rowers will race in heats to begin the day with a progression to a six-lane final. Boat classes from singles to eights will all be in the water on Saturday competing in men’s and women’s junior, senior, novice and mixed divisions.
