Weekend Preview: University Rowers Flock to St. Catharines for OUA Champs

One of the highlights of the Ontario rowing schedule will take place this weekend as rowers from across the province will travel to the Henley Course in St. Catharines for the 2022 OUA Rowing Championships.

The OUA Championships will run on Saturday and will feature thirteen Ontario university rowing programs, as well as McGill University from Quebec. The Brock Badgers have the most entries with 20, followed by the Western Mustangs with 19 and the Queen’s Gaels with 15, the Guelph Gryphons and Ottawa Gee-Gees with 14 and the Toronto Varsity Blues with 11. Other universities competing at the conference championships are the Trent Excalibur (11), McMaster Marauders (11), Carleton Ravens (10), McGill Redbirds/Martlets (9), Waterloo Warriors (7), Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (4), Laurentian Voyageurs (1), and Nipissing Lakers (1). Row Ontario and the Guelph Gryphons will jointly host the regatta.

At last year’s OUA Championships the Brock Badgers men’s team captured the Dr. PC Fitz-James Trophy by coming in first overall in the points standings, while on the women’s side the Western Mustangs continued their dominance winning their eighth consecutive Mrs. W. Lathrop Challenge Trophy. The two schools will look to defend their OUA Championships this weekend and will face stiff competition from programs throughout the OUA.

A busy day of rowing action will see the races kick off at 9am with the women’s pair heats and will wrap up around 5pm.

A day prior to the OUA Championships on Friday, Oct. 28, the Brock Badgers will host the 2022 Development Regatta which will also take place from the Henley Course. The regatta will see novice and junior varsity rowers complete their university rowing seasons. The Development Regatta will feature 13 of the 14 schools competing in the OUA Championships.

Elsewhere in the province this weekend, the Argonaut Rowing Club will host the Martha Coffey Frostbite Sprints in Toronto on the Western Beaches Dragon Boat Course. The regatta will take place on Sunday, Oct. 30 and will feature 750m sprint races for youth, women’s, and men’s in fours, quads, and eights. The action begins at 8am on Sunday morning.
