Weekend Wrap: 142nd Edition of Henley Takes Place in St. Catharines
The 142nd edition of the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta took place last week from its home on Martindale Pond in St. Catharines.
Running for six days from Aug. 4-9, the largest regatta on the Canadian domestic rowing calendar saw 130 clubs compete against each other in heats and finals in a wide variety of boat classes. The regatta had a total of 2137 entries, an increase of almost 80 from 2025. In addition to Canada and the USA, competing countries included Argentina, Germany, and Mexico.
Ontario clubs were well represented at Henley with 26 participating in the regatta, while six of Canada’s other provinces were represented at the event with clubs from BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, Alberta and Quebec. The St. Catharines Rowing Club had the most overall entries with 92, followed by the Calgary Rowing Club with 85 and the Ottawa Rowing Club with 81.
The competition throughout the week was fast and furious and showed the depth of the participating clubs. A total of 30 clubs earned Henley gold medals, with the Calgary Rowing Club and California Rowing Club taking home an event-high nine gold medals apiece. They were followed on the gold medal leaderboard by Craftsbury Green Racing Project (Vermont) with seven golds, and Buffalo Rowing Club and University of Victoria with six.
The top performing Ontario club was the Kingston Rowing Club with five golds, followed by the St. Catharines Rowing Club with four, and the Hanlan Boat Club with three. Other Ontario clubs finishing on the top step of the podium included the Brock Rowing Club (2), Peterborough Rowing Club (2), Don Rowing Club (2), Western Rowing (1), and Ottawa Rowing Club (1).
