Weekend Wrap: 2020 Coaching Clinics Start Up

The first two coaching clinics of 2020 took place over the weekend in the rowing communities of Sudbury and Midland, Ont.

The Sudbury Coaching Clinic was an RCA Learn to Row workshop and was hosted by the Sudbury Rowing Club. In the one-day Learn to Row workshop, coaches become equipped with the knowledge of lesson plans, appropriate drills, and how to better set up equipment to ensure a comfortable and injury-free rowing experience for rowers in a non-competitive context. The clinic was led by current Row Ontario board member and 2017 Canada Summer Games coach Amanda Schweinbenz and co-delivered by Kingston, Ont.’s Brad Brennan.

The two-day clinic in Midland was hosted by Georgian Bay Rowing club and led by Learning Facilitators Paul Beedling, who coached at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games and Iain Wilson of Hanlan Boat Club. The two LF’s took the attendees through RCA Coach Weekend #1, which takes the coaches through course curriculum and practical exercises focused on coaching athletes in a competitive context.

Overall a combined 17 coaches attended the clinics, became better educated on coaching theory and programs and moved a step closer in their NCCP certification process.

The next coaching workshops on the Row Ontario coaching calendar are the RCA Coach Weekend #1 (Hamilton, Ont.) and RCA Coach Weekend #2 (Kingston, Ont.) on Feb. 29. To view our events calendar with all upcoming Ontario coaching clinics and regattas please visit our website.
