Weekend Wrap: Brock and Queen’s Take Home OUA Banners

For the second consecutive year the Queen’s Gaels and Brock Badgers were crowned OUA Champions as Queen’s took home the OUA women’s banner while Brock earned the men’s banner.

The 2024 OUA Rowing Championships took place from Martindale Waterways in St. Catharines on Friday, Oct. 25. A total of 15 university programs attended the event, which featured novice, junior varsity and varsity events throughout a jam-packed day of racing. The athletes competed under overcast skies through most of the day, with periods of light rain in the afternoon. The weather didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the athletes and supporters, who were heard cheering from around the course throughout the event.

For Brock, this was the school’s fourth consecutive OUA men’s championship. The Badgers haven’t been defeated at the OUA’s since the COVID-break of 2020, though the Western Mustangs came close this year. Brock came out ahead in the points standings by just six points to claim the victory. The Queen’s Gaels earned their second consecutive women’s championship, coming out on top by 20 points over the second-place Western Mustangs.

With two second place finishes, the Western Mustangs earned the most overall medals at the event with 15 total (8 men’s, 7 women’s). Brock and Queen’s were next with 13 apiece, with both schools tying for the overall lead in gold medals with seven. Other schools reaching the podium in the varsity events included McGill Martlets/Redbirds (4), Carleton Ravens (3), Guelph Gryphons (2), Trent Excalibur (2), Toronto Varsity Blues (2), McMaster Marauders (2), Ottawa Gee-Gees (1), Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (1), and Waterloo Warriors (1).

The final regatta of the university season will take place this weekend in Victoria, BC when the Ontario schools travel west to participate in the Canadian University Rowing Championships.
