Weekend Wrap: CanAmMex Team Wins Medals in Mexico City
A team of 26 Canadian rowers took on fellow NextGen athletes from the USA and Mexico last week at the CanAmMex International Regatta in Mexico City, Mexico.
The annual event took place from Aug. 6-11 and featured a four-day training camp followed by a two-day regatta with the teams competing in a total of 12 events. The crews were led by a quartet of Ontario coaches, including Row Ontario’s own Sandra Farwell (Ontario NextGen Performance Centre), Cayley Firth (Leander Boat Club), Matthew Hagopian (Peterborough Rowing Club) and Connor Elsdon (Argonaut Rowing Club). The regatta took place at the Olympic Basin, the sight of the 1968 Olympic regatta.
The Canadian team earned a total of eight medals in the 12 events, with the highlight being a gold medal from Jack Coulson (Ottawa Rowing Club) and Remo Cramer (Calgary Rowing Club) in the men’s double. Both men’s and women’s single scullers earned a silver medal as Calvin Pally (Saskatoon Rowing Club) and Makena Kubica (Peterborough Rowing Club) finished second respectively. The Canadian women’s eight claimed Canada’s third silver medal in the final race of the weekend on Sunday. Bronze medals were won by the men’s pair, women’s quad, men’s eight and men’s four plus coxswain. Ontario rowers were well represented on the team as 17 of the 26 team members were from Ontario.
All was quiet for regattas in Ontario over the weekend, but that will change in a big way next week as St. Catharines will welcome the rowing world for the 2024 World Rowing Championships. The event takes place on Martindale Waterways from Aug. 18-25. Tickets are available at the below link:
