Weekend Wrap: CORA Welland Regatta Runs from South Course

Action on the Ontario summer regatta circuit continued over the weekend as the Central Ontario Rowing Association (CORA) Welland Regatta took place from the South Course of the Welland International Flatwater Centre on Saturday.

The CORA Welland Regatta was the first of two CORA-run events in consecutive weekends, with the CORA Championships taking place this Saturday in St. Catharines. In Welland, a total of 17 clubs competed over the weekend with 329 entries. Of the competing clubs, 16 came from the Central Ontario region with one also from the United States (Brighton Rowing Club). The rowers competed in U17, U19, Senior, and Masters age categories in a wide variety of boat classes.

A total of 13 of the 17 clubs earned first place finishes at the regatta. The Argonaut Rowing Club sent the most athletes with an event-high 50 entries and came away with the most gold medals with 15 going back to Toronto with them. Next on the gold medal tally was a trio of Niagara-area clubs with the Niagara Falls Rowing Club earning 11, followed by the St. Catharines Rowing Club and Niagara Community Rowing with ten apiece.

Other clubs earning gold medals on Saturday included the Don Rowing Club (7), Guelph Rowing Club (5), Kingston Rowing Club (5), London Western Rowing Club (4), Ridley Graduate Boat Club (3), Hanlan Boat Club (3), Notre Dame Rowing Club (3), South Niagara Rowing Club (2), and Georgian Bay Rowing Club (1).

In addition to the CORA Championships next weekend, the next few weeks will be a busy time on the Ontario regatta calendar with the RowOn Masters Championships being hosted on July 12 in Welland, and the RowOn Championships on July 18-19 in St. Catharines.
