Weekend Wrap: CSSRA Championships Headline Weekend in Canadian Rowing
The 78th edition of the Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association Championships took place over the weekend from its home on Martindale Waterways in St. Catharines.
The top high school rowers from across the country flocked to St. Catharines last week for three exciting days of regatta action from Friday-Sunday. The championship regatta featured 703 entries from 122 high school programs, 57 of which came from Ontario. US high schools were strongly represented at the event with 26 in total, which came from states such as Viriginia, New York, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. A total of 19 BC schools travelled east for the regatta, while Quebec (9), Nova Scotia (6), New Brunswick (2), Alberta (2), and Manitoba (1) were all represented.
The rowers competed in a total of 40 race categories across junior, senior, and novice divisions in men’s, women’s and mixed open and lightweight categories. A total of 45 schools won medals at the event, including 21 from Ontario. Mill Bay, BC’s Brentwood College School earned the most gold medals at the event, winning ten golds to go along with two silvers. Fonthill, ON’s EL Crossley SS topped Brentwood on the overall medal standings with 17 medals (6 gold, 6 silver, 5 bronze). Next on the medal tally for Ontario schools was St. Catharine’s Ridley College, who brought home six (3 gold, 3 silver), followed by Branksome Hall (Toronto) with five (2 gold, 3 silver), Sir Winston Churchill SS (St. Catharines) with four (2 silver, 2 bronze). Saint Paul CSS (Niagara Falls) with three (2 gold, 1 silver), Havergal College (Toronto) with three (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze), Denis Morris CHS (St. Catharines) with two (gold), Adam Scott CVI (Peterborough) with two (1 gold, 1 bronze), Eden HS (St. Catharines) with two (silver) and Upper Canada College (Toronto) with two (bronze).
Other Ontario school’s earning a single medal over the weekend included Welland Centennial SS, Pakdalian (Toronto), Westlane SS (Niagara Falls), Governor Simcoe SS (St. Catharines), West Niagara SS (Grimsby), Elmwood School (Ottawa), Blessed Trinity CSS (Grimsby), St. Francis CSS (St. Catharines), Kingston SS, Clarkson SS (Mississauga), and Loyola CSS (Mississauga).
With the high school season now over, many of the CSSRA competitors will move to club competition for the remainder of the rowing season.
