Weekend Wrap: CSSRA Championships Takes Over St. Catharines
The high school rowing season ended in style over the weekend at the 75th Canadian Secondary School Regatta Association (CSSRA) Championships.
Taking place from the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta Course in St. Catharines, Ont., the CSSRA Championships was held for the first time since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event featured almost 500 entries from 108 clubs from across the country who participated in three days of action. The first day of competition on Friday featured time trials for the women’s senior single, men’s senior lightweight single and women’s senior double, followed by heats and semi-finals on Saturday and finals for each of the 42 race categories on a busy Sunday.
EL Crossley had a strong regatta bringing home ten gold medals and tying for the most total medals with 12. The Fonthill school had the second-most entries of any Ontario school with 16, trailing St. Catharines Ridley College, who also earned 12 medals (2 gold, 5 silver, 5 bronze) competing on their home course. Four B.C. schools were next in the medal count, with St. Michaels University School (Victoria) and Brentwood College School (Mill Bay) each tallying nine medals and Claremont Sports Institute (Victoria) and St. George’s School (Richmond) with seven. Other strong performances from Ontario schools included Notre Dame College School (4 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze), Branksome Hall (2 gold, 4 silver), and Havergal College (5 bronze).
