Weekend Wrap: Head of the Martindale and Madawaska Run
While it’s still technically summer for a few more days, the fall rowing season is in full swing with two head races headlining the rowing action in Ontario over the weekend.
The 45th annual Jack Nicholson Head of the Martindale ran from its home on Martindale Pond in St. Catharines, ON on Saturday, while the Head of the Madawaska was hosted on the Madawaska River in Burnstown, ON. The regattas were each hosted by their long-time hosts, with the Ridley Graduate Boat Club hosting the Head of the Martindale and the Burnstown Rowing Club hosting the Head of the Madawaska.
In St. Catharines, the Head of the Martindale was a singles-only 5km event, and the competitors raced in masters, junior, lightweight, and open categories. The regatta featured over 80 entries from 11 clubs, with majority coming from the Niagara-based clubs such as Brock University, St. Catharines Rowing Club, South Niagara Rowing Club, Ridley College and the host RGBC.

In Burnstown, the Eastern Ontario rowing clubs comprised the start lists as members of the Ottawa Rowing, Ottawa New Edinburgh Club, St. Lawrence Rowing Club, Cornwall Rowing Club and host Burnstown Rowing Club all competed. The regatta had over 50 entries and featured 3km and 4.5km race distances with singles, doubles, pairs, quads, fours and eights.
