Weekend Wrap: Henley Week Kicks Off with Masters
The 141st Royal Canadian Henley Regatta began on Sunday with Masters rowers taking on the course on Martindale Waterways.
The Henley Masters Regatta, which doubled as the Canadian Masters Championships, attracted 50 clubs and 314 entries for the one-day regatta. Amongst the 50 clubs were 17 from Ontario, with Quebec (4), BC (2), Alberta (1) and Saskatchewan (1) also represented. Exactly half the clubs were international, as 25 clubs from the USA (21), Mexico (2), Great Britain (1) and New Zealand (1) were also represented.
Among the Ontario clubs competing the Ottawa Rowing Club and Ridley Graduate Boat Club tied for the most medals won bringing home 13 top-3 finishes each. The ORC claimed six gold, two silver and five bronze while the RGBC earned four gold, five silver, and four bronze. Five other Ontario clubs reached double digits in medals with the St. Catharines Rowing Club (6 gold, 5 silver, 1 bronze), Argonaut Rowing Club (3 gold, 4 silver, 5 bronze), Georgian Bay Rowing Club (5 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze), London Western Rowing Club (4 gold, 3 silver, 4 bronze), and Hanlan Boat Club (6 gold, 4 silver) all having strong days on the water.
Other Ontario clubs earning medals included the Peterborough Rowing Club (5), Don Rowing Club (5), Leander Boat Club (5), Guelph Rowing Club (2), South Niagara Rowing Club (2), LaSalle Rowing Club (1) and Orillia Rowing Club (1).
The action in St. Catharines continues all week as the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta begins with preliminary heats on Tuesday morning.
