Weekend Wrap: In-Person Indoor Rowing Competition Returns to Ontario


The first in-person indoor rowing competition in Ontario in two years took place on Saturday as the Ontario Ergometer Championships returned to Ridley College in St. Catharines.

Hosted by the Ridley Graduate Boat Club in the Ridley College Fieldhouse, the 34th Ontario Ergometer Championships featured junior high school, senior high school, and masters categories over lightweight and open divisions. A total of 220 competitors from 20 clubs or high schools across Ontario took part in the event.

Racing out of the senior high school men’s open division, Shane Keagan, representing the host Ridley College, posted the fastest men’s time of the day, winning his division in a time of 6:15.1. Malarie Jones of the Notre Dame Rowing Club pulled hard to the finish and earned the fastest time of the day on the women’s side at 7:15.3.

Jones led the Notre Dame Rowing Club’s members who claimed ten medals (4 gold, 2 silver, 4 bronze) at the event, followed by Keagan’s Ridley College teammates with seven (3 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze). St. Francis High School placed third in overall medals with three (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze). A total of 17 clubs or schools earned medals at the event.
