Weekend Wrap: Indoor Rowing Day Ergs Across Nation as Rowers Make it Coast-to-Coast

Indoor Rowing Day in Canada was a smashing success for the Canadian rowing community as rowers from across the nation participated in the inaugural edition of the event on Saturday Feb. 22.

In conjunction with rowing communities across the nation, the goal heading into the event was for rowers to log enough metres on their ergs to make it across the distance of Canada, a trek of 5514km. During a three-hour timeslot from 9am – 12pm, Canadian rowers proved they were more than up to the task as the tally for the day was an impressive 7567km, exceeding the goal by 2053km.

The Ontario rowing community played a big role in the country’s success, finishing with a total of 2729 km, good for 36% of the total distance covered. A total of 13 clubs organized events for the day to go along with a large number of individuals who participated at their respective homes, clubs, and fitness centres. The top contribution in Ontario came from the Argonaut Rowing Club, who erged a total distance of 465km from 43 athletes. Argonauts were followed by SCULLHOUSE Rowing with 367km and not far behind was the Brockville Rowing Club with 356km.

Indoor Rowing Day in Canada was not only a success in making it coast-to-coast across Canada, but it also increased the profile of the growing sport of Indoor Rowing and led to some innovative ideas from member clubs. Some of Ontario’s clubs ran intra-club 2km indoor competitions while others participated in 24-hour ergathons. Island lake Rowing Club also thought outside the box and partnered with the Mono Nordic Ski Club to host their event.

Indoor Rowing Day in Canada was organized by the Provincial Advisory Council (PAC), which consists of representatives from all provincial rowing associations.
