Weekend Wrap: Indoor Rowing Day in Canada Sweeps Across Nation
Indoor Rowing Day in Canada returned to in-person events for the first time since 2020 over the weekend as indoor rowers put in work on the erg at rowing clubs and fitness facilities across the nation.
The event was created by the Provincial Advisory Committee and first run in 2020, but for the last two years was restricted to at home rowing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year saw a return to in-person events, with the day starting at 9am NST in Newfoundland and making its way across the country ending in BC at 12pm PST. Rowers were tasked with putting in as many metres as they could between 9am-12pm in their time zone and the Canadian rowing community delivered, rowing a total of 4,736,260m. The total of 613 participants almost doubled the number who participated in 2022 and the total increased by 1.5 million metres. Several Ontario clubs organized events of their own, as did the training group at the Ontario NextGen Performance Centre and the Organizing Committee of the 2023 World Rowing Indoor Championships, who put on an event at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga featuring first responders and participants at the upcoming event.
An indoor rowing competition was also hosted on Indoor Rowing Day in Canada, as the McMaster 2×4 Challenge was hosted by the Leander Boat Club at the McMaster University Student Centre in Hamilton. The event, which consisted of teams of four athletes competing in a unique relay-style race over 8000m, featured a total of ten clubs, university programs and high school programs from across the province.
