Weekend Wrap: Mother’s Day Regatta Hosted in St. Catharines

With 41 competing high school and club programs taking to the water, the Mother’s Day High School Regatta took place on Sunday, from the Henley Course in St. Catharines.

The annual regatta, which is hosted by the St. Catharines Rowing Club, saw a total of 288 entries for the event, which featured junior, senior, and novice divisions across a wide range of boat categories. While many of the competing high school programs were from the Niagara region, several made the trip to St. Catharines from Toronto, London, Guelph, and Hamilton among others. Fonthill, ON’s EL Crossley finished on top of the podium ten times, out of a possible 41 categories, to win a regatta-high ten gold medals.

Also showing their strong early season form was Toronto’s Branksome Hall which earned seven gold medals and St. Catharines’ Ridley College which collected six. Denis Morris CHS was next on the gold medal tally with three, followed by Upper Canada College (Toronto), Saint Paul CSS (Niagara Falls), Blessed Trinity CSS (Grimsby), and West Niagara AA (Grimsby) with two apiece. Other schools topping the podium with one gold included Holy Cross CSS (St. Catharines), Sir Winston Churchill SS (St. Catharines), Guelph Highlanders, and Eden HS (St. Catharines). The Niagara Falls Rowing Club also earned a gold, winning the club’s women’s double, while the South Niagara Rowing Club won the men’s double.

The high school rowing season continues during the upcoming Victoria Day weekend (May 16-17) with the South Niagara Invitational in Welland, followed by the London Western High School Invitational in London on May 23. All roads lead back to St. Catharines on June 5-8, as high school rowers from across the country will compete on the Henley Course at the 2026 CSSRA Championships.
