Weekend Wrap: South Niagara Invite Runs from Welland
The Victoria Day long weekend saw regatta action take place in Welland as the South Niagara Invitational ran over two days from the South Course of the Welland International Flatwater Centre.
Hosted as always by the South Niagara Rowing Club, the high school regatta ran under brisk temperatures and included a total of 459 entries from 43 clubs and high school rowing programs from Ontario and the northeastern United States. The two full days of racing included boats in the U15, junior and senior age divisions in everything from singles to eights in mixed, open and lightweight divisions.
The regatta featured 44 different race categories, with some categories straight finals and others having heats depending on the number of entries. High school rowing power EL Crossley S.S. (Fonthill), who sent an event-high 72 entries, earned the most gold medals with 12. They were followed in the gold medal tally by the Orillia Rowing Club and Branksome Hall (Toronto) with five apiece, while the Argonaut Rowing Club (Toronto) and Peterborough Rowing Club each earned four golds.
Other Ontario clubs and high school programs with first place finishes over the weekend included Havergal College (Toronto), Sir Winston Churchill SS (St. Catharines), Niagara Falls Rowing Club, and Don Rowing Club (Mississauga) with two golds, and Upper Canada College (Toronto), Ridley College (St. Catharines) and Blessed Trinity CSS (Grimsby) with one apiece.
The high school rowing season in Ontario continues this weekend (May 24) with the London Western High School Invitational. In just under two weeks high school rowers from across the country will descend on St. Catharines for the CSSRA Championships (May 30 – June 1).
