
Weekend Wrap: The Tony B. Runs on the North Course in Welland
Row Ontario hosted the Tony Biernacki Sr. Memorial Regatta for the first time on Saturday after taking over hosting duties from Brock University Rowing who had hosted the annual event since its inception.
The regatta, which is geared towards masters rowers, took place on the North Course of the Welland International Flatwater Centre and was the second regatta Row Ontario hosted this year after running the Small Boat Regatta from the South Course in Welland in May. The action took place between 10am and 3pm on Saturday and featured over 100 rowers from 13 clubs from across Ontario and one (West Side Rowing Club) from the United States. The Argonaut Rowing Club had the most entries with 22, followed by the Don Rowing Club with 13, the Georgian Bay Rowing Club and St. Catharines Rowing Club with 12, and the Peterborough Rowing Club and the Leander Boat Club with 11.
The Don Rowing Club (5 gold, 3 bronze) and the St. Catharines Rowing Club (6 silver, 2 bronze) tied for the most medals earned with eight. The DRC’s five gold medals was also tops amongst all clubs. The Argonaut Rowing Club were next in the medal count with seven (2 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze), followed by the Hanlan Boat Club who had an impressive day claiming five medals (two gold, 3 silver) with only seven entries. The Georgian Bay Rowing Club (2 gold, 2 silver) and the South Niagara Rowing Club (1 sliver, 3 bronze) tied for fifth place in the medal standings with four medals each.
