Weekend Wrap: Two Indoor Rowing Events Highlight First Weekend of March
The temperature in the air is still cold but the action on the erg was heating up the indoor rowing circuit this weekend with the running of the Nancy Storrs Ontario Indoor Rowing Championships and McMaster 2×4 Challenge.
The Nancy Storrs Ontario Indoor Rowing Championships was organized by the Ridley Graduate Boat Club and took place from its home at the Ridley College Fieldhouse in St. Catharines on Saturday, March 1. The event was well attended with 536 entries from 33 clubs or high school programs, who competed in U13, U15, junior high school, senior high school, open and masters race categories over 500m or 2000m distances. The fastest 2000m time for the men went to William Babineau (Senior HS) of EL Crossley SS, who finished his race in a time of 6:19.4. On the women’s side Elene Brett-Evans (Masters) of the Hanlan Boat Club had the top overall time with a finish of 7:07.3.
The McMaster 2×4 Challenge was hosted by the Leander Boat Club at the McMaster University Student Centre on Sunday, March 2. A total of 17 university programs, high schools or clubs took part in the always exciting event, which featured teams of four giving their all over 2000m for each competitor. The top women’s team at the event was the crew from U of T in the varsity division (25:51.8) while on the men’s side a crew from Western also scored the top finish time of the day (21:37.9) in the varsity division.
This weekend marked the final indoor event in Ontario for the winter as the competitive focus now turns to the outdoor season, which will kick off with the St. Catharines Rowing Club’s Early Bird Regatta on April 27.
