Weekend Wrap: Two Regattas Highlight Canada Day Weekend in Ontario
Two regattas bookended Canada Day Weekend as the Dominion Day Regatta took place from Toronto on Friday, July 1 and the CORA Regatta ran from Welland on Sunday July 3. The two regattas featured almost 400 entries combined, meaning many from the Ontario rowing community added competing in a regatta to their list of long weekend activities.
The Dominion Day Regatta, which is Canada’s oldest and largest combined rowing and paddling regatta, featured rowing, along with canoe, kayak and dragon-boat racing on the Toronto Island’s regatta course. In rowing action, there were 176 entries from nine clubs, including 55 from the Argonaut Rowing Club, followed by the St. Catharines Rowing Club (26), Notre Dame Rowing Club (25), Don Rowing Club (24), Peterborough Rowing Club (22), and Hanlan Boat Club (21).
A point system is used to identify an overall Points Champion for the event, and the hometown Argonauts earned the Points Championship at this year’s event. They were followed by St. Catharines in second place and Notre Dame in third.
On Sunday, the CORA Regatta took place from the South Course of the Welland International Flatwater Centre. The Central Ontario Rowing Association (CORA) is in its 67th year and they returned to hosting regattas after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The CORA Regatta featured 191 entries from 13 clubs from across Ontario. The St. Catharines Rowing Club had the most with 39, followed by the Notre Dame Rowing Club with 27 and the South Niagara Rowing Club and Western University with 24 each. Other clubs competing at the regatta included Niagara Falls Rowing Club (22), Hanlan Boat Club (19), Guelph Rowing Club (15), Orillia Rowing Club (7), London Western Rowing Club (4), Durham Rowing Club (4), Georgian Bay Rowing Club (3), Don Rowing Club (2), and Leander Boat Club (1).
CORA will host their next regatta, the CORA Championships, this coming Saturday from Martindale Pond in St. Catharines.
