
Weekend Wrap: University Rowers Test Themselves at Brock Invite
The last opportunity for university rowers to test themselves prior to the OUA Championships took place on Saturday in St. Catharines as 12 Ontario universities competed at the Brock Invite.
The rowers competed on a 7-lane, 2000m course in open weight, lightweight, and novice divisions in singles, pairs, doubles, fours and eights. Three schools dominated the action as the Queen’s Gaels (10 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze) Western Mustangs (3 gold, 7 silver, 5 bronze) and host Brock Badgers (4 gold, 8 silver, 3 bronze) each brought home 15 medals. The Gaels led the way with 10 gold medals and were particularly strong in the smaller boats winning gold in the men’s single, double, pair, lightweight single, lightweight pair and women’s pair, lightweight single and lightweight double. Bringing home gold medals for the host Badgers were the lightweight women’s eight, lightweight men’s eight, men’s four and lightweight men’s four.
The Trent Excalibur were next in the medal standings with four (1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze), followed by the Ottawa Gee-Gees with three (2 gold, 1 bronze), and the Toronto Varsity Blues with two (1 silver, 1 bronze). The Laurentian Voyageurs also claimed a silver medal while the Carleton Ravens, Waterloo Warriors, Guelph Gryphons and McMaster Marauders each brought home a bronze.
In novice action, the Trent Excalibur won three of the four races, bringing home gold in the men’s and women’s eight and the women’s four. The Waterloo Warriors took home gold in the men’s four.
The university rowers will next be in action at the OUA Championships which take place in Welland, Ont. on Saturday, Oct. 30.
