Weekend Wrap: University Rowing Season Starts at Western Invite

The first regatta on the Ontario university rowing schedule took place in London over the weekend with the Western Invitational running from Fanshawe Lake on Saturday, Sept. 21.

The regatta was contested by eight university programs from around Ontario with the host Western Mustangs leading the way with 29 entries. There were a total of 134 entries at the event, which included the McMaster Marauders (22), Toronto Varsity Blues (22), Guelph Gryphons (20), Brock Badgers (19), Waterloo Warriors (13), Ontario Tech Ridgebacks (8), and Windsor Lancers (1). Windsor was making their debut in Ontario University rowing competition after starting a program earlier this year. Samantha Greenham, who competed in the lightweight women’s single, was the first Lancers rower to compete in a regatta.

Western and Brock, two traditional rowing powerhouses, showed their early season form by coming out on top of the medal standings. The Mustangs earned the most total medals with 20 (8 gold, 7 silver, 5 bronze), while Brock claimed the most gold medals with nine, to go along with five silver and three bronze for a total of 17. Next on the medal tally was the McMaster Marauders with 11 (5 gold, 2 silver, 4 bronze), followed by Guelph with nine (3 gold, 2 silver, 4 bronze), Toronto with seven (1 gold, 5 silver, 1 bronze), Ontario Tech with three (1 silver, 2 bronze) and Waterloo with one (bronze).
