Hanlan Boat Club Hires Two Head Coaches as Part of New Coaching Centre of Excellence Initiative

Hanlan Boat Club has hired two experienced head rowing coaches to run its Junior rowing and U23/Senior rowing programs for the 2022 season. Long-time rowing coach Tony Tremain will return as the Club’s U23/Senior Head Coach, as well as take on the new position of Managing Director for Hanlan’s new Coaching Centre of Excellence. In this dual role, he will not only guide the club’s senior rowers to competitive success at regattas throughout Ontario, but also develop all of Hanlan’s coaches to higher levels of performance.

“Athletes in the U23/Senior program can expect a challenging training regimen that will prepare them for competition at the highest level,” Tremain said. “I will also be working with all coaches to develop skills above and beyond what is required for the RCA Coach Education program, to the benefit of each individual and Hanlan Boat Club overall.”

Tony Tremain has been coaching since 1984 and has contributed to the success of numerous clubs, schools and universities, including Argonaut Rowing Club, Branksome Hall, Hanlan Boat Club, Ottawa Rowing Club, Montreal Rowing Club, University of Toronto, McGill University, and Upper Canada College. He has been an assessor coach since 1998 and is now an RCA Performance Coach and Coach Educator. In 2005, he was the Ontario Rowing Team Coach and Manager at the Canada Summer Games. Tremain has also worked with a number of national level coaches during his career, including Roger Meager, Karol Sauvé, Carol Love, Dusan Kovacevic and Peter Cookson.

Hanlan Boat Club has also hired Julia Toljagic, who will return in her dual role as Head Junior Coach and Club Manager for the 2022 season. Toljagic will work closely with Tremain to train and develop Hanlan’s youth rowers, preparing them for competition during the spring, summer and fall seasons.

“I look forward to working together with Tony and know that his presence at Hanlan will help all the coaches develop their skills,” Toljagic said. “The junior athletes I work with will also benefit tremendously from having Tony drop into our practices, and I know that I personally will learn from him as a coach, both on and off the water.”

Prior to becoming Hanlan’s Head Junior Coach last year, Toljagic served as an Assistant Coach, Learn-to-Row Instructor, Program Coordinator and Junior Coach at Hanlan. She also volunteers with the Upper Canada College rowing program, and has worked previously as a swim coach and sprint canoe/kayak coach. Toljagic was a member of the University of Toronto rowing team from 2015-2019 and served as Women’s Team Captain in her final year. Julia has a H.B.Sc. in Neuroscience from the University of Toronto and a Grad. Certificate in Sport Business Management from Humber College.

“I am thrilled that we have landed such experienced coaches for our competitive rowing programs and know that the Coaching Centre of Excellence will attract qualified coaches from across Canada who wish to improve their craft under the dedicated tutelage of Tony,” said Janet Bolton, Secretary for Hanlan’s Board of Directors.
