Ontario’s NextGen Rowers Set for Exciting August

With the eyes of the rowing world on the Paris Olympic Regatta, the next generation of elite Canadian rowers are preparing for an exciting month of August that will see them compete in two high-profile international events.

The CanAmMex Regatta is first up on the schedule and will take place in Mexico City, Mexico from Aug. 6-11 at the Olympic Basin. The following week St. Catharines will welcome the worldwide rowing community to Martindale Pond for the 2024 World Rowing Senior, U23 and U19 Championships (Mega Worlds) from Aug. 18-25.

Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) recently announced the selection of the Canadian team for the CanAmMex Regatta and added several new crews to the roster for Mega Worlds, which was previously announced in June. Ontario’s NextGen rowers will be well represented at both events with 17 of the 26 members of CanAmMex squad from Ontario and 45 of the 83 athletes competing at the World Championships from Ontario clubs and universities. Approximately 20 different schools and clubs from the Ontario rowing system will be represented by the team members, showing the depth of quality rowers being developed throughout the province.

Several current and former members of the Ontario NextGen Performance Centre were named to the World Championships team, including current members Lucas Maroney (JM1x) and Ella McKinley (BW4x). Maroney will compete in his third consecutive U19 World Rowing Championships after placing 11th in the junior men’s double in 2022 and 10th in the single last year. McKinley, who will be competing for the Syracuse Orange in the NCAA next year, will be making her national team debut. Nine alumni of the ONGPC will also be competing.

ONGPC coaches Chris Marshall and Sandra Farwell will be a part of an impressive group of coaches charged with preparing the rowers for the events. Marshall will be coaching at the Mega Worlds while Farwell will a part of the CanAmMex coaching staff. All four of the coaches on the CanAmMex team are from Ontario, as are nine of the 13 coaches on the Mega World coaching staff.
