Weekend Preview: 50th Head of the Trent Headlines First Weekend of October
This weekend the eyes of the Ontario rowing community will be focused on the 50th edition of the famed Head of the Trent, which will run on Saturday, Oct. 2 in Peterborough, Ont.
With almost 500 entries from 47 clubs, the Head of the Trent figures to be the largest regatta to take place in Ontario in 2021. The annual regatta was first hosted in 1971 by Trent University, prior to the Peterborough Rowing Club taking over hosting duties several years later. This year’s event will feature a busy day of rowing that begins at 8:45am with the last race running at 5:20pm. A wide variety of race categories will compete on Saturday with university, masters, club, and under-19 divisions all in action in boats ranging from singles to eights. The competitors will all race along the scenic Trent Canal and Otonabee River in a 5km head race.
The focus of the international rowing community will once again be on Oeiras, Portugal this weekend, where the 2021 World Rowing Coastal Championships will be hosted from Sept. 30 – Oct. 2. Last weekend Oeiras played host to the World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals, which saw three Canadian athletes compete. Two of those athletes, Aubrey Oldham (Leander Boat Club) and Sarah Pidgen (Don Rowing Club), will compete again this weekend in the CMix2x category after reaching the quarterfinals in the Beach Sprint Finals last weekend. Charles Hauss of the Lachine Rowing Club in Quebec rounds out the Canadian competitors and will compete in the CM1x category. The World Rowing Coastal Championships will feature 812 athletes from 34 countries competing in 342 total boats over three days of action.
