Weekend Preview: Head of the Trent Highlights First Weekend of October
With the leaves already changing colours along the Trent-Severn Waterway, rowers from across the province will descend on Peterborough, Ontario this weekend for the Head of the Trent.
The Head of the Trent returns to a two-day format after a one-day event was run in 2021. Last year’s event marked the 50th anniversary of the Head of the Trent as well as a return to the annual fall regatta after it was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Entries are up to almost 600 this year, a sharp increase from last year’s entries and above pre-pandemic levels. A total of 59 clubs will be represented at the event, with the majority coming from Ontario in addition to clubs from Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Alberta, Maryland and Great Britain. The Argonaut Rowing Club will send the most boats to compete with 41, followed by the Ottawa Rowing Club with 38, Don Rowing Club with 31, and Western University and the host Peterborough Rowing Club with 29.
Saturday and Sunday will both feature full days of head race action, as the action will start around 8:15am and end just after 5:30pm. Men’s and women’s singles, doubles, pairs, quads, fours and eights will all be in action across a variety of race divisions as well as several mixed categories.
One of the final row tours of 2022 will also take place this weekend as the Hanlan Boat Club will host the Rice Lake Tour. The two-day tour will take place on the 32km Rice Lake, and the participants will enjoy the start of the gorgeous autumn setting in Northumberland County.
