Weekend Preview: June 17-18
Domestic and International regattas are both on tap this weekend as the Tony Biernacki Sr. Memorial Regatta will take place in Welland and the 2022 World Rowing Cup II will run from Poznan, Poland.
Row Ontario will host the ‘Tony B.’ for the first time on Saturday June 18, after taking over hosting duties from Brock University Rowing who has hosted the annual event since its inception. The Tony B. has become a staple of the early summer racing calendar for Masters rowers in Ontario and will take place on the North Course of the Welland International Flatwater Centre. Just over 100 entries have been submitted so far for the event, from 14 clubs from across the province. The regatta will be the second Row Ontario has hosted this year after running the Small Boat Regatta from the South Course in Welland in May.
The entry deadline for the Tony B. has been extended until Friday at 10am so there is still time to enter.
The 2022 World Rowing Cup II is the second event of the 2022 World Cup Series and will be the first to feature Canadian rowers. The regatta will be hosted on Lake Malta in the centre of Poznan from June 17-19. The Canadian team will feature seven boats and 22 rowers.
On the men’s side, Trevor Jones will compete in the men’s single while Laura Court will cox the men’s eight of Curtis Ames, Terek Been, Cody Bailey, Jakub Buczek, Luke Gadsdon, William Crothers, Ryan Clegg, and Joshua King. Five boats will compete for Canada on the women’s side, including Jill Moffatt and Karissa Riley in the lightweight single sculls and Marilou Duvernay-Tardif and Shannon Kennedy teaming together in the double sculls. Two Canadian boats will race in the fours, with Gabrielle Smith, Cassidy, Deane, Morgan Rosts, Alexis Cronk racing against their fellow national team members Sydney Payne, Kirsten Edwards, Jessica Sevick, and Avalon Westenays.
Lake Malta is one of the most modern venues in the world and over the last twenty years has hosted large international events in water sports. Poznan hosted the 2007 and 2015 European Rowing Championships, the 2009 World Rowing Championships, the 2016 World Rowing Cup III, the 2017 World Rowing Cup II and the 2020 European Rowing Championships.
