Weekend Preview: World Rowing Championships Begin, Head of the Martindale Runs

The biggest event on World Rowing’s 2022 race calendar begins on Sunday as the World Rowing Championships will kick off from Racice, Czechia. On the domestic front, the annual Jack Nicholson Head of the Martindale will run on Saturday from St. Catharines.

Canada will send a strong team of nine crews and 35 athletes to compete in the World Rowing Championships, which will take place from Sept. 18-25. On the women’s side, the W8+, W4-, W2-, W2x, LW2x, and LW1x, W1x boats will all compete while three men’s boats, the M1x, M8+ and M2x will take the Racice’s waters against the worlds best. Of the 35 athletes competing, 18 have Ontario rowing connections.

The rowing course in Racice was completed in 1986 and has hosted numerous high profile rowing events since such as the World Rowing Junior Championships (1986, 2010, 2018), World Rowing U23 Championships (2009, 2021) and previously hosted the World Rowing Championships in 1993. The men’s and women’s singles will be the first race of the World Championships at 9:30am on Sunday morning local time.

The Jack Nicholson Head of the Martindale is once again a September event this year after switching to September from its traditional May date last year for the first time. The annual regatta will take place from its home on the Henley Course on Martindale Pond in St. Catharines and will be hosted by the Ridley Graduate Boat Club. The event is for singles only, and will feature a one lap race or two lap race for the competitors. This year’s race is a special event as it will help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Ridley Graduate Boat Club. Commemorative T-Shirts have been designed for the event and following the awards at the end of the day a boat christening of the RGBC’s new single, appropriately named ‘50th Anniversary’ will take place.
